DIGITAL PATHOLOGY

Pathology plays a central role in the study of modern medicine because it is the study of structural and functional abnormalities that manifest as diseases of organs and systems. The use of current information technology can promote student learning outcomes in general and systemic pathology. Hence, Department of Pathology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine has applied virtual microscopy (VM) to the undergraduate pathology practicals since the academic year 2016.

Based on the VM system, the pathology tissue slides are digitised just once and then made available to large classes simultaneously. The third-year medical students can quickly and easily compare normal and abnormal, even on the same screen. In addition, they do not encounter the mechanical barriers to the actual learning of histopathology such as focus, staining, lighting, etc.
The VM system transforms the structure of all histopathology laboratory sessions to team-based learning (TBL). Contrary to the traditional light microscope-based teaching of pathology, the medical students and the teachers can truly identify any lesions on the same tissue slide at the same time in collaborative groups. This system also actively empowers the medical students to access the collections of teaching pathology tissue slides anytime, anywhere.
